How does stress affect the digestive system?

1) When one is stressed, digestion slows or stops.

2) Stress causes stored fats and sugars to be released. Cholesterol and blood sugar levels increases.

3) Stress causes the blood composition to become thicker and more prone to clotting. This increases the risk of stroke and heart attack.

4) With prolonged or recurrent stress, the body is unable to replace nutrients adequately. This can lead to nutritional deficiencies and systems break down.

5) Stress suppress the immune system, which leaves the person more susceptible to illness and slow healing.

Does stress cause stomach issues?

  • Chronic and excessive production of cortisol hormone in the suppression of the immune response cause Cushing's syndrome. A metabolic disorder that result in accumulation of: fat on the chest, upper back, face and also edema; muscle weakness; purple striae on the skin; osteoporosis, which makes one susceptible to fracture of the bone; acne; facial (hair) hirsutism; high blood pressure; hyperglycemia (elevated blood sugar) that does not usually responds to treatment. Diabetes may become chronic. The most common cause of this syndrome is pituitary gland tumor.

  • The pituitary gland located in the brain, is the master gland that sends out hormones to regulate the activity of organs, which in turn regulates other glands to release hormone. The stomach is consisting of muscle, blood vessels, nerves, and glands which are also vulnerable. In Diabetes there is a problem with the hormone insulin released by the pancreas ( gland) for the control of glucose (sugar).

  • Degenerative disease are caused from disorders in the function of the glands and nervous system.

  • Usually in emotional shock, insulin's control of blood sugar is altered.

Is stress dangerous to the digestive system?

If there is a perceived stress, even subconscious, there is a rapid response to prepare the individual to cope with the crisis. The pituitary-adrenal response is activated and responds by releasing hormones that act on the body. This suppresses the immune system by inhibiting the inflammatory response. Digestion is slowed or stopped. In this state, bacteria spread throughout the body. The kidney responds, the blood sugar increases, as well as may other body responses.

In this overwhelmed state of stress, the immune system is not able to do what it is designed to do. The immune system is designed to protect the body by attacking and destroying viruses, bacteria, germs, and incomplete metabolized food which penetrates the lining of the intestinal tract and enters the interior body system.

Cancer cells appear when the immune system mechanism within the cell is broken. Chemical carcinogenesis acting through free-radicals' damage to DNA, causing mutation to the cells that become fixed in the genetic content of the daughter cells and invades the surrounding tissue. The glands, other stressed organ systems, and the entire body are are at risk of potential danger.
